Christmas Day uniforms are now available at the online NBA store, and the presumably non-musically inclined Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Russell Westbrook and Joe Johnson are here to tell you about it — in the best way they know how. The group dribbles basketballs in a seemingly haphazard melody that later settles down to become a recognizable Christmas classic in this commercial from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.
The spot will air during Wednesday’s NBA games right before Black Friday. It uses a “basketball as instrument” idea we’ve seen before, in a way. Remember Wieden’s awesome Nike “Freestyle,” directed by Paul Hunter? The random sounds emerging into something familiar also reminds us of Volkswagen and Deutsch LA’s pre-Super Bowl teaser, “The Bark Side,” which used doggie woofs to create The Death March.
David Beckham has also cashed in on the sports-plus-music trend, via this Cheil USA/Samsung spot that featured the soccer player kicking balls onto a wall of drums to make some music. Check it out on Creativity-Online.com and follow on Twitter for more great work.
